Modeling of dielectric elastomers: Design of actuators and energy harvesting devices
نویسندگان
چکیده
Dielectric elastomers undergo large deformations in response to an electric field and consequently have attracted significant interest as electromechanical transducers. Applications of these materials include actuators capable of converting an applied electric field into mechanical motion and energy harvesting devices that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Numerically based design tools are needed to facilitate the development and optimization of these devices. In this paper, we report on our modeling capability for dielectric elastomers. We present the governing equations for the electromechanically coupled behavior of dielectric elastomers in a thermodynamic framework and discuss the attendant finite-element formulation and implementation, using a commercial finite-element code. We then utilize our simulation capability to design and optimize complex dielectric elastomeric actuators and energy harvesting devices in various settings. & 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fabrication Process of Silicone-based Dielectric Elastomer Actuators
This contribution demonstrates the fabrication process of dielectric elastomer transducers (DETs). DETs are stretchable capacitors consisting of an elastomeric dielectric membrane sandwiched between two compliant electrodes. The large actuation strains of these transducers when used as actuators (over 300% area strain) and their soft and compliant nature has been exploited for a wide range of a...

A key element in stretchable actuators, sensors, and systems based on elastomer materials are compliant electrodes. While there exist many methodologies for fabricating electrodes on dielectric elastomers, very few succeed in achieving high-resolution patterning over large areas. We present a novel approach for the production of mechanically robust, high-resolution compliant electrodes for stre...

Dielectric elastomer generators (DEGs) for harvesting electrical energy from mechanical work have been demonstrated but the energy densities achieved are still small compared with theoretical predictions. In this study, signifi cant improvements in energy density (560 J/kg with a power density of 280 W/ kg and an effi ciency of 27%) are achieved using equi-biaxial stretching, a mechanical loadi...

This chapter reports on advances done in the design of compliant, Dielectric Elastomer based Linear Actuators (DELA). Dielectric Elastomers (DE) are incompressible deformable dielectrics which can experience deviatoric (isochoric) finite deformations in response to applied large electric fields while, at the same time, alter the applied electric fields in response to the deformations undergone ...
متن کاملDielectric elastomer membranes undergoing inhomogeneous deformation
Dielectric elastomers are capable of large deformation subject to an electric voltage and are promising for use as actuators, sensors, and generators. Because of large deformation, nonlinear equations of states, and diverse modes of failure, modeling the process of electromechanical transduction has been challenging. This paper studies a membrane of a dielectric elastomer deformed into an out-o...
